Private day charters in the Seychelles

A day charter in the Seychelles is a private boat and skipper for the day, or an evening cruise into the sunset. It is the simplest way to get out among the islands while you are here: no week to commit to, no planning, just a boat, a skipper and a stretch of clear water. Every charter leaves from Eden Island Marina on Mahé, and the boat is yours alone for the time you book.

For visitors already in the Seychelles, a day charter is often the highlight of the trip. You can be snorkelling in Sainte Anne Marine Park within half an hour of leaving the dock, take a larger group out for a celebration, or watch the sun go down off the west coast with the island behind you. Because these trips come together quickly, they are easy to arrange at short notice once you have arrived.

What a day charter is

A day charter is private hire of a boat for part of a day, with a skipper and any crew the boat needs. You choose the boat, the duration and roughly where you want to go, and the skipper does the rest. The format is a full day of about 8 hours, with an optional 2-hour sunset cruise in the evening. The boat is not shared with other guests — the day is yours.

Choosing your yacht

• Arcturus (Bali 5.4) and Ocean (Lagoon 50) are the entry point to the crewed fleet — modern cruising catamarans with open living space, well suited to a family or two couples sharing, at the most accessible weekly rates.
• Nowo (Lagoon 51) takes up to fourteen guests, making it a good choice for a larger family group or friends travelling together who want everyone on one boat.
• Marlena (Lagoon 620) and Eye Candy (Catalante 720) are larger again, with more cabin comfort, more deck space and a larger crew — a step up for guests who want room to spread out.
• Akula is a Leopard 53 power catamaran rather than a sailing yacht. It suits guests who prefer to motor between islands at a steadier, faster and more level pace, covering more ground in a day.
• Spirit of Ponant, a Lagoon 77 with a crew of four, is the flagship — the yacht for a significant occasion, with the space and service to match.

While the other yachts may be designated as bareboat, they all offer the option of a skipper and crew. We will talk you through the differences and recommend two or three that fit your group, your dates and your budget.

The day fleet

Silk is a sailing catamaran with ample deck space and shade, well-suited to a relaxed day of swimming and snorkelling for a family or a group. Mokarran is a nimble motor yacht for a couple or a small group who want to reach a snorkelling spot quickly. Oceanic, at 85 feet, takes up to twenty-eight guests – the boat for a larger party, a celebration or a group event. Each comes with a skipper, and crew where the boat calls for it.

Where you’ll go

Within the day’s range, the skipper will recommend the best option based on the wind and sea conditions and adjust if conditions change.

• Sainte-Anne Marine Park. Just off Victoria and a fantastic choice for a day on the water. Clear, sheltered water and the small islands of Cerf, Round, Moyenne and Long, with easy snorkelling straight off the boat.
• The West Coast and Baie Ternay. Port Launay and Baie Ternay Marine Park on the west of Mahé offer calm, protected water and good snorkelling, with Thérèse Island nearby. A natural choice for a full day.
• Beau Vallon and the North. Mahé’s main bay, often combined with a sunset cruise as the light goes.
• Sunset Cruises. A short evening run along the west or north coast as the sun drops, calm and unhurried — a couple of hours rather than a full outing.

What you’ll see in the water

The Inner Islands have warm, clear water and accessible reefs, which is what makes Sainte Anne Marine Park such a reliable choice for a day out. Snorkelling straight off the boat, you can expect reef fish in numbers, and green and hawksbill turtles are seen regularly in the marine park and around the islands. The granite shorelines drop into sand and coral close to the surface, so you do not need to be a strong swimmer to see plenty. Between roughly August and October, whale sharks pass along the coast of Mahé, and snorkelling trips are sometimes arranged around them in season. The skipper carries snorkelling gear aboard and will point you to the best spot for the conditions. 

A day on the water

People charter a yacht for the day for many reasons. Families take a day in the marine park for swimming and snorkelling in calm water. Groups of friends book a full day to reach quieter anchorages and spend the afternoon in the water. Couples mark an occasion with a private boat and a sunset. When to charter

Day charters run all year. The islands are warm throughout, and there is almost always a sheltered coast to head for whatever the wind is doing – if the south-east is up in the trade-wind season, the skipper works the more protected water, and in the calmer north-west monsoon most of the coast is an option. April and October to November tend to bring the flattest seas and the clearest water, which shows at its best on a snorkelling day, but any month is workable. We confirm the outlook when you book and pick the cruising area to suit.

Food, provisioning and costs

On most crewed charters, catering is arranged through a provisioning allowance — sometimes called an APA — agreed before you sail. It covers food, drinks, fuel and park fees, and is reconciled at the end of the charter against what was actually spent, with the balance returned. This keeps the catering genuinely tailored: the cook shops to your preferences and dietary needs rather than to a fixed menu. When to charter

The islands are warm year-round. May to September bring the steadier south-east trade winds and drier air; November to March is calmer and warmer, with lighter winds and occasional rain; April and October to November are often the clearest, calmest weeks of the year and are popular, so worth booking ahead. Your skipper plans around whichever season you sail in.
